In a world that often feels divided, where people from different backgrounds and cultures can sometimes struggle to find common ground, the Ignatian Day Celebration with Migrants proved to be a shining beacon of unity and hope. On this auspicious day, 482 migrants, representing diverse paths and stories, gathered at Loyola Campus in Chennai on the 23rd of July 2023 with the noble objectives of coming together as one family, finding relaxation amidst life’s challenges, and forging meaningful connections with one another. The event commenced with two simultaneous activities, reflecting the core essence of the celebration. While the Eucharistic celebration brought Christians together to pray for the victims of Manipur and the overall well-being of migrants, the Games created a space where non-Christians could bond and engage in light-heartedly. This duality of activities symbolized the power of inclusivity and the richness that emerges when diverse minds and hearts converge.
During the second part, the Cultural Event, the stage came alive with vibrant tribal dances, paying tribute to St. Ignatius of Loyola, the guiding light of the occasion. Rev. Fr. Robin SJ, the rector of Loyola College, graced the event as the chief guest, imparting his wisdom and blessings upon the gathering. We celebrated the joining of new staff members and bid farewell to a beloved former director, Fr. Henry William SJ, cherishing the memories created together. In line with the spirit of St. Ignatius and his commitment to uplifting others, the migrants were enlightened about insurance schemes provided by the State Bank of India, empowering them to secure their futures. Several migrants were even inspired to apply for these schemes on the spot, an encouraging step towards securing their well-being.
Amidst the jubilation and merriment, a profound message resonated with everyone present – the importance of being aware of one’s legal rights and the need to stand up and fight for those rights in their working places. This call to action served as a powerful reminder that every individual has a voice that deserves to be heard and respected. The day reached its pinnacle with a heartwarming community lunch, breaking bread together as a symbol of unity and nourishment for both the body and soul. The chain group dance that followed was a visual testament to the strength of solidarity, and celebrating each culture with the spirit of inclusivity and a spirit of celebration. As the event culminated with the distribution of gifts, the true essence of the Ignatian Day Celebration with Migrants shone through – it wasn’t just a celebration, it was a transformative experience that left an indelible mark on each participant’s heart. The objectives were not merely met, they were surpassed, for this gathering was more than just an event; it was an affirmation that no matter where we come from, we can build a future together, side by side.
In a world where walls threaten to divide, the Ignatian Day Celebration with Migrants served as a testament that bridges of understanding and compassion can be built. It reminded us that by acknowledging our shared humanity, by listening to one another’s stories, and by uplifting each other, we can create a world where everyone can find their place, a world where everyone is embraced as a member of one global family. May this celebration continue to inspire, spark dialogue, and ignite the flame of unity in every heart it touches, for together, we can build a world of compassion, respect, and love.
